New wiring for extension, kitchen boiler and lighting for scheme to make house accessible for disabled person

"The firm had done work previously a number of times and when they refused to give price for job just assurances I mistakenly trusted them. Another trade, then the building inspector highlighted they had fitted 2 ovens and hob illegally, spliced old wiring onto new, simply added everything including the new boiler onto a single existent circuit, not earthed the hob or boiler. In addition, light switches were in wrong rooms and too high, a TV point was installed over a work surface not requested, and I was charged for an electric toilet installation that I do not have.

When I asked for some money back they sent me a solicitors' letter asking for a further £300. They claimed I agreed to pay them hourly (I am retired on a widow's pension and benefits and would never have agreed to such an arrangement)- so I was eg charged £120 when 2 men went and collected a 45 cm plastic pipe for the extractor. These detailed hourly charges were not on their original invoices - they had difficulty trying to find hours to fit what they had charged me. So it took 6 hours for 2 men to put in 4 spot lights? Putting their work right will cost over £1000.

Should I risk money by counter suing? All they have to do is dissolve the firm. These people are 'trusted traders' - Beware!
