Reputations are not built overnight
In Referenceline's view, this track record is more important than the ratings. Don't be impressed by a few old reviews which may not be representative.  Look for firms with a commitment to asking for feedback - good or bad - from their customers.  We recommend that you look for a track record of ratings and reviews in at least 9 of the last 12 months and that you should not be too concerned about an isolated negative review.  Ask the firm for their side of the story.

Good Practice
Businesses have a legal responsibility to treat you fairly, but it's often hard to know what questions to ask or what standards to expect.  They are the experts and you should be able to rely on them to help you make decisions.  These questions explain the commitments that this business has made to follow a code of practice and they will help you understand what you have a right to expect.

Charges: 99%
Before starting work, did the firm explain the charges including labour, materials, callout & VAT (as appropriate)?

Timing: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain when the work was expected to start and finish?

Payment: 98%
Before starting work, did the firm explain how to pay (e.g. cash, cheque, etc.)?

Reliable: 100%
During the work, did the firm keep their promises, explaining and agreeing any changes about the work, costs or timing where necessary?

Invoice: 98%
On completion, did the firm give you an invoice showing the cost of materials, labour and VAT?

Guarantee: 95%
On completion, did the firm give you a guarantee for a specified amount of time, or usage (where applicable)?
You can see how many customers have said "Yes" in answer to each question, but please don't expect 100% in every case.  Nobody's perfect and some customers may not be completely sure about the answer.  It's more important that you understand these questions and discuss them with the business so that you both agree what good service means for you.  A responsible business will be happy to explain the details to you and it's always better to clarify these points upfront to avoid misunderstandings later on.

Complete replacement and renovation of bathroom: removal of bath, WC, hand basin, radiator and wall coverings; fitting false ceiling and lights; tiling walls; installing new WC, heated towel rail, flooring and walk-in shower; replacing extractor fan and bathroom door.

Cost: £4250

"Shaun provided an exemplary service, from the intitial planning stage to the completion of the job. He advised us about suppliers and materials. The work itself was carried out promptly and very professionally.

As the work proceeded, Shaun consulted with us regularly to make sure we were happy with what he was doing. But if we weren't around we knew we could trust Shaun to take sensible decisions about the precise placing of towel rails, spotlights, etc.

Shaun has an excellent eye for detail. He takes pains to ensure that the final result not only appears to be well done but actually is well done. For example, his expert eye noticed that the new WC we had bought had an internal hairline crack as, it turned out, had two more WCs sent by the supplier as replacements (a faulty batch, clearly). If it were not for Shaun's care and attention we would have unwittingly installed a slowly leaking WC. Having alerted us to this unforeseen problem, Shaun was supremely patient in resolving it. Indeed, his patience throughout was extraordinary.

So impressed were we with the standard of Shaun's work that we have now hired him to renovate our kitchen.

Full kitchen re-fit

Cost: £5000

"Shaun did an excellent job of putting in our new kitchen. We had bought all the units but failed to allow for some infills and end pieces but Shaun made it all work for us. We had a lot of detailed fussy expectations and Shaun was patient and helpful throughout the whole process - which included putting up with two boisterous pups
Would use him and recommend him with pleasure"

"We were thrilled with Handymannies and Shaun Forsyth's service with the company. He showed a genuine commitment to our kitchen and bathroom renovations in Carnoustie. His prices were reasonable and he had great ideas on updating our rooms. We were out of country when the renovations were taking place, but Shaun was highly professional and kept us informed with his detailed e-mails. He answered our numerous questions and ensured that the tiles, floors, kitchen cabinets, bathroom suite, faucets, etc., matched our choices. We were very pleased with the finished work and his attention to detail. The workmen cleaned up at the completion of their renovations and left the house in good order. I would highly recommend HandyMannies for kitchen and bathroom renovations."

Customer Review

Shaun helped advise me while I designed my kitchen layout. He was very patient while I considered several different possible options. He removed the old kitchen, fitted the kitchen that I had ordered online from DIY Kitchens, fitted appliances and did the tiling work. He also supplied and fitted a new uPVC back door.

"I was very pleased with all aspects of the work carried out by Shaun and Cliff. Having used their handyman services for a couple of small jobs previously, I was confident that they were the right firm to undertake my kitchen refit. Shaun always turned up punctually for appointments during the planning stages, and when work commenced, they were there as expected, on time and worked conscientiously. They were always polite and left the house in as tidy a state as possible each day. Shaun kept me informed about how long the work was expected to take, and was accurate in his expectations. He was very patient with me when items that I had ordered did not arrive when expected, and when other problems arose. I have had no hesitation in using Shaun for other jobs - he also fitted a new bathroom and supplied and fitted a new garden gate. I have been happy to recommend him to friends and family."

We have been using HandyMannies for over 6 years and will continue to do so due to Shaun’s consistency in always providing a first class service. We now save time and effort not contacting other companies for estimates even for larger jobs due to the confidence we have in his reliability and fairness.

Cost: £5300

"This year we required the complete replacement of our en suite bathroom and can echo sentiments placed by previous satisfied customers regarding how helpful Shaun is with jobs of this nature by taking the pressure away from the customer due to his willingness to source and purchase all materials. He also coordinates other tradesman as required. Shaun is very skilled at the initial consultation stage because he has a very good eye and attention to detail which he utilizes to provide gently, persuasive, excellent advice on key issues such as materials,, colour schemes and fixtures & fittings. We are again more than delighted with the result and will continue to use HandyMannies as our go to home improvement company. No matter the job, big or small - give Shaun a call!"

Built new room and installed toilet/sink/cupboards

Cost: £5750

"This was the first time I had used www.handymannies.com and will definitely use them again and recommend them to everyone. The standard of their work is excellent and they tidied up as they went. I really liked the fact I didn't have to co-ordinate tradesmen as this was all done by Shaun. When we asked for slight modifications it wasn't a problem and they finished on time as they had planned. I thought the price they charged was very reasonable.

I would definitely recommend them to others."
