Reputations are not built overnight
In Referenceline's view, this track record is more important than the ratings. Don't be impressed by a few old reviews which may not be representative.  Look for firms with a commitment to asking for feedback - good or bad - from their customers.  We recommend that you look for a track record of ratings and reviews in at least 9 of the last 12 months and that you should not be too concerned about an isolated negative review.  Ask the firm for their side of the story.

Good Practice
Businesses have a legal responsibility to treat you fairly, but it's often hard to know what questions to ask or what standards to expect.  They are the experts and you should be able to rely on them to help you make decisions.  These questions explain the commitments that this business has made to follow a code of practice and they will help you understand what you have a right to expect.

Charges: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain the charges including labour, materials, callout & VAT (as appropriate)?

Timing: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain when the work was expected to start and finish?

Payment: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain how to pay (e.g. cash, cheque, etc.)?

Reliable: 100%
During the work, did the firm keep their promises, explaining and agreeing any changes about the work, costs or timing where necessary?

Invoice: 71%
On completion, did the firm give you an invoice showing the cost of materials, labour and VAT?

Guarantee: 100%
On completion, did the firm give you a guarantee for a specified amount of time, or usage (where applicable)?
You can see how many customers have said "Yes" in answer to each question, but please don't expect 100% in every case.  Nobody's perfect and some customers may not be completely sure about the answer.  It's more important that you understand these questions and discuss them with the business so that you both agree what good service means for you.  A responsible business will be happy to explain the details to you and it's always better to clarify these points upfront to avoid misunderstandings later on.

Laid patio and prepared bed for planting and general tidy of garden.

Cost: £1650

"Arrived on the day & time they said they would to quote for the work. Arrived on the day & time they said they would to start the work. Whilt the work was being done, they were courteous and sent me a message to say they were going to be late due to road works. From what I have seen, the work has been done to a high standard in the time frame given. Invoice was issued in a timely manner.

I was pleased with the overall experience."

Dense block retaining wall built to create a usable patio area and entertaining space with raised planters. Formation of new path and steps to garden and decorative garden fence and trellis panels installed.

Cost: £5000

"Prior to commencement on site, Shepherds communication was first class. We were keep up to date on the proposed programme, materials and associated costs. Shepherds effortlessly meet our aspirations of design and material finishes while working within the constraints of our total budget.Cost effective material samples were offered for approval in a timely manner and exceeded our expectations.

Shepherds arrived on time on the agreed start date and got straight to work, even though the weather was against John he braved the wind and torrential rain and started to construct our retaining wall.

Shepherds took their time setting out and getting their levels and was obvious that John had a good eye for detail and was meticulous & methodical in the way he approached all aspects of his job.

As the job progressed John often suggested small details and ideas to help improve and finish the overall scheme as per our initial aspirations and was easy to discuss any element that we wanted to amend or expand on.

John happily undertook some additional areas of work at an agreed rate prior to starting so we were aware of all costs.

Having worked in architecture for the past 15 years i can honestly say John is a hard working and trusted landscaper with a good degree of technical knowledge and skill set with an eye for detail and design.

We are very pleased with the final result and exceptional value for money. It has been an enjoyable stress free process and would highly recommend Shepherds landscaping for your building and landscaping needs."

Full landscaping of large garden including large patio, large slabbed area for shed, decking, turf, wooden borders, stones, plants and tree.

Cost: £7800

"Could not fault the work and john is a perfectionist. I did find the costs somewhat high but the work and materials were of a very high standard. John worked day and night(in all weathers) and was always very friendly."
