Reputations are not built overnight
In Referenceline's view, this track record is more important than the ratings. Don't be impressed by a few old reviews which may not be representative.  Look for firms with a commitment to asking for feedback - good or bad - from their customers.  We recommend that you look for a track record of ratings and reviews in at least 9 of the last 12 months and that you should not be too concerned about an isolated negative review.  Ask the firm for their side of the story.

Good Practice
Businesses have a legal responsibility to treat you fairly, but it's often hard to know what questions to ask or what standards to expect.  They are the experts and you should be able to rely on them to help you make decisions.  These questions explain the commitments that this business has made to follow a code of practice and they will help you understand what you have a right to expect.

Charges: 98%
Before starting work, did the firm explain the charges including labour, materials, callout & VAT (as appropriate)?

Timing: 91%
Before starting work, did the firm explain when the work was expected to start and finish?

Payment: 76%
Before starting work, did the firm explain how to pay (e.g. cash, cheque, etc.)?

Reliable: 100%
During the work, did the firm keep their promises, explaining and agreeing any changes about the work, costs or timing where necessary?

Invoice: 95%
On completion, did the firm give you an invoice showing the cost of materials, labour and VAT?

Guarantee: 84%
On completion, did the firm give you a guarantee for a specified amount of time, or usage (where applicable)?
You can see how many customers have said "Yes" in answer to each question, but please don't expect 100% in every case.  Nobody's perfect and some customers may not be completely sure about the answer.  It's more important that you understand these questions and discuss them with the business so that you both agree what good service means for you.  A responsible business will be happy to explain the details to you and it's always better to clarify these points upfront to avoid misunderstandings later on.

I had my combi boiler serviced and a new wireless controller and receiver fitted.

Cost: £228

"The engineer showed up at the agreed time, was polite, friendly and kept me informed what he was doing. Once he identified the fault, he called his manager who spoke to me and told me the cost of the repair and explained the payment terms.

Work was completed within one hour and I was left with the boiler functioning correctly. An invoice was emailed to me one month later.

Great service and I will use HGS again when the boiler needs servicing or repair."

Gas boiler servicing

"I phoned to arrange a service of my boiler and from that very first phone call they were a pleasure to deal with. They even managed to get out to me later that same day as theyd had a cancellation even though its the busiest time of year for boiler servicing!

Id recommend them to anyone."

1.boiler service 2. replace faulty pump

Cost: £275

"Our first experience was a couple of years ago in a rental property when our letting agents used HGS. The service was great, with friendly and efficient staff.

We have recently used them again for our own property, firstly for a standard boiler service and then again to fix a fault which materialised. Again, the service was great and charges reasonable we felt.

With the fault, they went above and beyond to help us and came out to us with the replacement part, to fit it the same morning we called - we had a newborn baby in the house and no heating or hot water so really appreciated this first class customer service!"

Replacement of part for ball cock valve in cold water tank to cure loud noise on refilling. Washer replaced in kitchen tap.

Cost: £96

"The work was done promptly and very successfully. Our loft is not easy to access and contains loose insulation material which is difficult to deal with but despite this the work was completed with great efficiency and good humour. I would thoroughly recommend this company."

Had all pipes changed upstairs, 2 radiators replaced and 1 radiator fitted, new pipes downstairs

"I had all pipes replaced upstairs (due to previous plumber putting wrong size in), 3 new radiators and new pipes downstairs, I have lived in this property for 4 years and had on and off heating in that time, HGS plumbing came and fixed the problem quick and professionally... I've been messed about for so long but these guys have finally resolved the problem! Billy was brilliant!! He was fab with the kids, he was tidy, swift and got the job done... no messing about! Couldn't recommend these guys enough! 5* service"

Leaking valve on hot water cylinder

Cost: £66

"I have used HGS probably 3 times in the last few years. I have never dealt with any firm that is so helpful, professional and customer-centred. The phone is answered promptly and politely. Every effort is made to get an engineer to the property as soon as possible. Even on the odd occasion when the phone is busy, the automated system tells you where you are in the queue instead of listening to the usual drivel of "your call is important to us.." which you know is not true and still leaves you hanging on wondering whether you will be connected in the next minute or two or in the next 6 hours.

The engineers are polite and friendy, they do an expert job and there is no mess. The firms charges are reasonable and competitive and importantly they deliver value to the customer.

If you don't take any notice of this reference you have only yourself to blame."
