Reputations are not built overnight
In Referenceline's view, this track record is more important than the ratings. Don't be impressed by a few old reviews which may not be representative.  Look for firms with a commitment to asking for feedback - good or bad - from their customers.  We recommend that you look for a track record of ratings and reviews in at least 9 of the last 12 months and that you should not be too concerned about an isolated negative review.  Ask the firm for their side of the story.

Good Practice
Businesses have a legal responsibility to treat you fairly, but it's often hard to know what questions to ask or what standards to expect.  They are the experts and you should be able to rely on them to help you make decisions.  These questions explain the commitments that this business has made to follow a code of practice and they will help you understand what you have a right to expect.

Charges: 75%
Before starting work, did the firm explain the charges including labour, materials, callout & VAT (as appropriate)?

Timing: 75%
Before starting work, did the firm explain when the work was expected to start and finish?

Payment: 75%
Before starting work, did the firm explain how to pay (e.g. cash, cheque, etc.)?

Reliable: 75%
During the work, did the firm keep their promises, explaining and agreeing any changes about the work, costs or timing where necessary?

Invoice: 75%
On completion, did the firm give you an invoice showing the cost of materials, labour and VAT?

Guarantee: 75%
On completion, did the firm give you a guarantee for a specified amount of time, or usage (where applicable)?
You can see how many customers have said "Yes" in answer to each question, but please don't expect 100% in every case.  Nobody's perfect and some customers may not be completely sure about the answer.  It's more important that you understand these questions and discuss them with the business so that you both agree what good service means for you.  A responsible business will be happy to explain the details to you and it's always better to clarify these points upfront to avoid misunderstandings later on.

Replacement glass and service for five 30-year old Velux windows. Original request was for three windows but on advice from the fitter on-site, two malfunctioning glazing units were also replaced with higher quality glass. Fuss-free, timely and totally professional service.

Cost: £1200

"Initial web-site order and subsequent administrative telephone conversation clarified all necessary details for the work to be done and completed while the customer was absent.

Supportive, on-site advice enabled additional, cost-effective, remedial work to be carried out to additional windows at a subsequent agreed date.

Absolutely no hesitation or reservation in recommending this business to others who wish to undertake similar work."

Replacement and upgrading of glass pane in my large Velux roof light.

Cost: £613

"Website order system extremely clear and easy to use. Kept fully informed by very helpful office assistant. Was able to pay by credit card giving further reassurance. Price was competitive even though they travelled a long way. Was actually much cheaper than quote from builder only 35 miles away. Arrived on time. Worked efficiently, tidily and were very courteous. Product seems excellent and am extremely pleased with the finished job. On my experience, I would not hesitate to recommend."

Replacement of 3 Velux glazing units (I was the client). Also replacement of one additional glazing unit (my neighbour''s builders were the client - having broken it)

Cost: £476

"Loft Solutions started the project in a bad mood. My neighbour's builder contracted them to replace a Velux glazing unit on my roof that he (the builder) broke. When Loft Solutions arrived they found the glazing unit they brought was the wrong size. They complained bitterly to me about this as if it were my fault despite the fact that I had never spoken to them (apart to arrange a time). They said they would expect their travel costs to be paid and the cost of the glazing unit bought in error. My attitude is that this was a matter between them and their client.

Whilst they were a my house I foolishly asked them to quote for replacing 3 other glazing units. I asked them if they could do me a deal given that they would likely be coming back to do the 4th unit contracted by the builder.

Over a series of emails we agreed that I would pay for three units and no travel costs. My assumption was that the builder would pay travel costs in contract to replace his one unit, but I was not privy to that conversation.

I paid a deposit to Loft Solutions by CC via telephone against an estimate that clearly stated zero travel costs. The balance was payable after installation. No parking costs were ever mentioned. My assumption was that I would pay on receipt of an invoice and guarantee documents and when the work was done to my satisfaction.

An email confirmation was sent to me, and I did not spot wording right at the bottom (in eye-unfriendly block caps) "*** PLEASE NOTE, IF PARKING CHARGES OR PERMITS APPLY TO YOUR PROPERTY PLEASE PROVIDE TO THE TECHNICIAN ON THE DAY OF YOUR INSTALLATION ***"

The installation was set for Nov 3rd. An email was sent on Nov 1 confirming this and saying "Please ensure that if any parking permits or parking charges apply to your property that these are paid/supplied to the technician upon his arrival." I replied that day saying that I was not responsible for travel costs or parking costs.

The technician (who is the company owner apparently) arrived on the 3rd and again complained about his last abortive visit (which had nothing to do with me). He demanded a parking voucher or cash. I said that I had not agreed to pay this. He said in that case he was leaving. Since I had already paid a deposit of 300 I decided that the sensible think was to give in to this blackmail and pay the parking cost, with a view to deducting it from the final invoice. I had to plead with him to stay.

The work was done.

I then emailed to complain and to ask that the parking charge be credited to the final invoice. They ignored my email. I then discovered that Loft Solutions appear to have retained my credit card details from the deposit and the same day charged the balance (179 or so) to my credit card. They said nothing about this nor did I give them consent to. They have sent me no invoice and no guarantee documents. When I emailed them and asked them to reverse the charge because I wished to pay an alternative way and had not given them consent to reuse my credit card details they demanded I pay them the money a second time before they would issue a refund on the first credit card.

They are unpleasant and they have behaved in a despicable and dishonest manner. They blackmailed into paying parking and unlawfully used my credit card a second time. They are clearly sore about the first visit - but that had nothing to do with me.

Do not ever work with them.
