Customer Review

We initiated a contract to have the existing 1996 Econoloft loft conversion removed and a new conversion and roof put in according to current standards. Elite Econoloft Ltd failed to meet their contractual obligations since we instructed them in February. We signed a contract and paid the £3000 deposit, but there were so many issues and errors that followed, with the price we signed for being increased, drawings and receipts regarding other properties provided to us on more than one occasion, items being charged for that had already been included in the order form, inaccurate final specification and payment schedule, and start dates repeatedly delayed. The stress of having to make several attempts along the way to address these issues made us completely lose faith in their capability to deliver the service and we felt forced to terminate the contract before the work started. We terminated the contract on this basis and requested half of our £3000 deposit back. They refused our request, so we are lodging this complaint to warn others about them. Since we have instructed a different company and they removed the existing Econoloft conversion, we are glad we did not proceed with them. Perhaps the regulations in 1996 were not so stringent, but there were 3 beams bolted together rather than one full section, and the floor had dropped because the weight of the roof pushing down via the dwarf wall had deflected the timber floor joists over time. This meant the floor joists had very minimal bearing on the main supporting steel. Further, the supports to the old velux windows were inadequate and there was no insulation at all in the eaves storage area. We have photos to prove this. I have lodged a complaint with Fair Trades about them, but as yet Econoloft have failed to respond to their enquiries.

"I have laid out a chronology of events to explain why we have terminated the contract with Econoloft, what their failings were in providing a service to us, and why we feel that it is reasonable for us to receive a 50% refund on the deposit we paid.
1. Throughout the process there was a total lack of communication, and when received not always coherent, often contradicting what another staff member has agreed in writing.
2. Initial drawings were of our friends’/neighbours loft conversion completed a few years ago, even though we had discussed our required layout and it was very different to theirs.
3. Since paying the deposit in February and setting a start date in late April, this was delayed by lockdown and we were patient, however we had radio silence for weeks on end, which we found worrying.
4. We received a receipt from Econoloft from another customer, which we flagged up to them and returned.
5. We were told by phone by a director in late March that the price had to go up by £7k due to their issues with costings. We challenged this and asked them to explain exactly what this was for. Eventually the price was lowered to £3k and we offered to split the cost, which Econoloft agreed to. We set a revised start date of 1 August, and emptied our loft (which was our bedroom) and put everything into storage, at a significant cost to us.
6. A member of staff was on bereavement leave, so we were again patient and understanding, and delayed the start date to 1 September when we were told another staff member would take our project further, but she did not respond to our emails or phone-calls. By the time I managed to get through to someone in accounts, she told me the original person was back the next day and to wait for them to contact me. It took another 2 days of me calling to make contact and at this point we were given a start date of 24 September. I requested references for the building team that would be assigned to our works, and was promised ‘next week’ for two weeks running (we never received them).
7. Items like triple glazed windows, agreed in the order both parties signed in February, were added again to the price when they were supposed to be included. Things like the number of power points (chargeable if incorrect) were not accurately listed in our costings. It wasn’t until we forwarded original emails and documents stating that the windows were included that this was amended. Econoloft still did not rectify the power points issue even after this conversation.
8. Despite sending their specification back to them in Word format with amendments highlighted in red text a number of months previous, we received a third incorrect specification via post on 8 September, along with the technical drawings for two other properties and the specification for French doors that was out of date. Econoloft were seeking payment of over £12k at this point and we still had not received accurate documents. The price and payment schedule did not tally. It was at this point we thought that enough was enough and we terminated the contract and sought the return of half of the deposit.
9. We pointed out the breach of GDPR to Econoloft and they asked us to destroy or return the drawings and stated that they have notified the clients of the situation, but I remain unconvinced by this and concerned that they may have sent my private information to one or more other customers in error.
10. Econoloft refused to give us any of the deposit back because they say the deposit was non-refundable, even though they have not fulfilled their side of the contract and were still not in a position to start works on the third start date due to their incompetence.
