Reputations are not built overnight
In Referenceline's view, this track record is more important than the ratings. Don't be impressed by a few old reviews which may not be representative.  Look for firms with a commitment to asking for feedback - good or bad - from their customers.  We recommend that you look for a track record of ratings and reviews in at least 9 of the last 12 months and that you should not be too concerned about an isolated negative review.  Ask the firm for their side of the story.

Good Practice
Businesses have a legal responsibility to treat you fairly, but it's often hard to know what questions to ask or what standards to expect.  They are the experts and you should be able to rely on them to help you make decisions.  These questions explain the commitments that this business has made to follow a code of practice and they will help you understand what you have a right to expect.

Charges: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain the charges including labour, materials, callout & VAT (as appropriate)?

Timing: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain when the work was expected to start and finish?

Payment: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain how to pay (e.g. cash, cheque, etc.)?

Reliable: 100%
During the work, did the firm keep their promises, explaining and agreeing any changes about the work, costs or timing where necessary?

Invoice: 100%
On completion, did the firm give you an invoice showing the cost of materials, labour and VAT?

Guarantee: 100%
On completion, did the firm give you a guarantee for a specified amount of time, or usage (where applicable)?
You can see how many customers have said "Yes" in answer to each question, but please don't expect 100% in every case.  Nobody's perfect and some customers may not be completely sure about the answer.  It's more important that you understand these questions and discuss them with the business so that you both agree what good service means for you.  A responsible business will be happy to explain the details to you and it's always better to clarify these points upfront to avoid misunderstandings later on.

The old sandstone from the adjoining cottages beside our house was causing dampness inside, the team took all the old sandstone back as far as possible sealed it all and built a new external wall with concrete blocks. They then extended the roof out and married in the old slates with the new, you wouldn’t even know there was a new roof tied in. Internal the guys had to strip back the old plaster lathe and insulate the rooms with kingsman insulation and insulated plasterboard to spec. We also had a kitchen moved from one side of the house to the extension at the other side of the house.

"We can’t believe everything went so smooth, Gregor was on the ball right from the off and any problems we came across were quickly solved by him too. Great value for money, under budget and top class tradesmen. We had other builders come and see the job and they hummed and hawed over the right way to do things, Gregor engages with us straight from the start and we’ve now passed shire Joinery Scotland details onto our friends in the Ayr."

I had been buding a summer house however my roof had a number of leaks and I had no idea where they were coming from.

Cost: £180

"I spoke with Gregor of shire joinery about this who came and reviewed the problem He quickly identified the issue and confirmed that it wasn't a major job. He had a look at the supplies I had and confirmed that he could use what was there and I would not need to buy any further materials

Gregor then went to work and resolved the issue and since then its stood up to the elements. Gregor was polite, courteous and transparent about what he was doing and why and explained the job in layman's terms. The job has been done to my satisfaction. I would happily recommend him to anyone looking for a reliable joiner."

We had a massive loft conversion done of around 50m2 and some alterations to the downstair of our house in prestwick.

Cost: £42000

"We decided to ask Gregor to price a loft conversion for us after our friends recommended him to us, when Gregor turned up his level of engagement was exceptional we knew straight away we would be using him to complete our project. Gregor's extensive knowledge and expertise was second to none, he arranged all the trades from the architect to the finishing touches we wouldn't go by this man and he'll be coming back when our next project is at the forefront. We've now given his business cards out to relatives who need work done.

Thanks Gregor and we'll see you soon X"

Shire Joinery have completed a number of projects for us, ranging from fencing to full toilet/shower room facilities.

"Shire joinery redesigned our shower and toilet facilities. They were badly dated and to have them completed has made such a huge difference. The work was completed in the agreed time and we were very pleased with the standard of work. Wouldn't hesitate to use them again and in fact will be the first firm to get contacted.
P.s. We were also pleased they were able to put up a fence for us, as short notice."
