Reputations are not built overnight
In Referenceline's view, this track record is more important than the ratings. Don't be impressed by a few old reviews which may not be representative.  Look for firms with a commitment to asking for feedback - good or bad - from their customers.  We recommend that you look for a track record of ratings and reviews in at least 9 of the last 12 months and that you should not be too concerned about an isolated negative review.  Ask the firm for their side of the story.

Good Practice
Businesses have a legal responsibility to treat you fairly, but it's often hard to know what questions to ask or what standards to expect.  They are the experts and you should be able to rely on them to help you make decisions.  These questions explain the commitments that this business has made to follow a code of practice and they will help you understand what you have a right to expect.

Charges: 97%
Before starting work, did the firm explain the charges including labour, materials, callout & VAT (as appropriate)?

Timing: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain when the work was expected to start and finish?

Payment: 97%
Before starting work, did the firm explain how to pay (e.g. cash, cheque, etc.)?

Reliable: 100%
During the work, did the firm keep their promises, explaining and agreeing any changes about the work, costs or timing where necessary?

Invoice: 93%
On completion, did the firm give you an invoice showing the cost of materials, labour and VAT?

Guarantee: 83%
On completion, did the firm give you a guarantee for a specified amount of time, or usage (where applicable)?
You can see how many customers have said "Yes" in answer to each question, but please don't expect 100% in every case.  Nobody's perfect and some customers may not be completely sure about the answer.  It's more important that you understand these questions and discuss them with the business so that you both agree what good service means for you.  A responsible business will be happy to explain the details to you and it's always better to clarify these points upfront to avoid misunderstandings later on.

Mark built a new gate at my mother's house

Cost: £800

"Mark and his associate were friendly and helpful. They explain what the process would be and how long it would take. The handle they had for the gate was not suitable so they went to the Iron monger and got and fitted a more suitable handle. They were excellent and I would highly recommend them."

Customer Review

Kitchen renovation and fitting Fitted bathroom Fitted WC

"From initial point of enquiry Mark showed a keen interest in the job and arranging a site visit and was more than happy to work around me in gaining access to quote the work, even after I had to cancel and rearrange a couple of times.

We were really happy with the quote because of the price and transparent breakdown in costs.

Both Mark and Paul were friendly and professional. They always turned up when agreed and advised us of any changes or delays to arrangements which were perfectly reasonable.

We had an issue with another tradesmen which in turn delayed Tay’s schedule and they were extremely pleasant and positive about the situation despite this potentially costing them other work.

They did everything they could to help us meet our deadline and there were times when they went above and beyond the scope of works to help me! For example, lifting up old carpets from the stairs which I was unable to do myself.

They took charge of project management and liaised with the plumber and plasterer on my behalf which I found daunting and they saved me this hassle. There was a manufacturing issue with the bath which would have cause a severe headache, however they picked up on this fault straight away and dealt with it promptly and professionally I probably wouldn’t have even known about it had they not given me a briefing on what happened.

Would use Tay Joinery again and certainly reccommend them.
