Glass balustrade complete with stainless steel posts, stainless steel handrail and Aqua tinted 10mm toughened glass

Cost: £3010

"I told the company I wanted to go ahead with the job, a few days later Lawrence came to measure up, he took 1500 in cash never gave me a receipt, 2 weeks later I asked for a receipt, a week later Lawrence started work, I saw a change to the way he was fitting the posts than my quotation stated, my quotation stated that the posts would be core drilled into the concrete and posts to be sunk into pre drilled hole filled with mortar to secure them, the posts had baseplates and were bolted down, he fitted 7 of the posts each post was supposed to have 4 bolts holding it in the ground but 1 post had 3 bolts another had 2 bolts holding it down this balustrade is a safety rail because there is a drop of nearly 5 feet straight down onto concrete, when he was about to fit the 8th post he told me he had the wrong post for my job but he continued to fit the post knowing he had told me it was the wrong post, he core drilled this post and filled the hole with mortar to secure it he then cut and fit 3 sections of the handrail I saw him placing the handrail on top of the post that he had just placed into mortar which had not set and with the movement of the handrail on the post the post hole had become loose and the post was wobbling, the components that join the 8 posts to the handrail have 2 cast screw holes so the component can be screwed to the handrail to make it secure, he then began to weld the components to the handrail instead of using the cast screw holes in the components I asked him why this was being done and he said that "you wont see the weld after I clean and polish it" he commenced to weld the component into the top of each post where it was supposed to be secured with a special loctite adhesive

Once the welding had been done he then took a rotating sanding buffer to the post tops and tried to buff the weld up so it would not be seen and he could not hide it so he continued to buff the metal on the post away until it was unsightly and totally ruined, he packed up his tools and left, I had a look at what I was paying 3010 for and to my utter shock I find that under the handrail which is quite visible from the ground as it was about 9 feet from the ground in the garden there was this unsightly messy welding and very bad blue burn marking where the posts were welded to the handrail, also where one end of the handrail meets up with a wall of the house which is nearly 9 feet from the sheer drop on to concrete the handrail was left unconnected to the wall leaving that particular area in a dangerous condition

A couple of weeks later Lawrence turned up to fit the glass, when he had finished fitting the glass he was expecting to be paid the balance of 1510, I told him I was not happy with the work, I asked him to come in side and I showed him 25 pictures I had been taken of the wrong post fitted, the loose end of the handrail, the unsightly welding, the unsightly blue burn marks and the very badly buffed away metal on the posts, he said he wanted me to be happy and that he would come back another time and rectify the problem then he left.

Later I asked the company if they would remove the balustrade because the unsightly welding and the badly buffed away metal areas as it could not be fixed then replace the balustrade and fix it with screws through the cast screw holes so there was no welding I was told this was not an option.

I was given these 2 options- A - The welds polished out, a fabricated plate fixed to the wall and the 2 glass panels removed and replaced. On completion the balance of 1500 paid. B - The full balustrade removed and your deposit of 1500 refunded in full by bank transfer. If you are not happy with either of my options please feel free to contact your local trading standards department for more advice.

I had no choice but to have my 1500 refunded which was done
I have many pictures to prove that this is the truth
