Reputations are not built overnight
In Referenceline's view, this track record is more important than the ratings. Don't be impressed by a few old reviews which may not be representative.  Look for firms with a commitment to asking for feedback - good or bad - from their customers.  We recommend that you look for a track record of ratings and reviews in at least 9 of the last 12 months and that you should not be too concerned about an isolated negative review.  Ask the firm for their side of the story.

Good Practice
Businesses have a legal responsibility to treat you fairly, but it's often hard to know what questions to ask or what standards to expect.  They are the experts and you should be able to rely on them to help you make decisions.  These questions explain the commitments that this business has made to follow a code of practice and they will help you understand what you have a right to expect.

Charges: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain the charges including labour, materials, callout & VAT (as appropriate)?

Timing: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain when the work was expected to start and finish?

Payment: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain how to pay (e.g. cash, cheque, etc.)?

Reliable: 100%
During the work, did the firm keep their promises, explaining and agreeing any changes about the work, costs or timing where necessary?

Invoice: 92%
On completion, did the firm give you an invoice showing the cost of materials, labour and VAT?

Guarantee: 89%
On completion, did the firm give you a guarantee for a specified amount of time, or usage (where applicable)?
You can see how many customers have said "Yes" in answer to each question, but please don't expect 100% in every case.  Nobody's perfect and some customers may not be completely sure about the answer.  It's more important that you understand these questions and discuss them with the business so that you both agree what good service means for you.  A responsible business will be happy to explain the details to you and it's always better to clarify these points upfront to avoid misunderstandings later on.

Kitchen Renovation (July 17) Bathroom Renovation 2014

"I have used Stuart and his team twice, recently for my kitchen renovation and a few years ago for my shower room. Very pleased with the expert guidence on planning the Kitchen through to the work being carried out, swiftly and very profession, i have a small ackward shaped kitchen which wasn't an easy space to work in, Stuart arranged, plumbers, electricians, plasterer, decorator and his team of excellent joiner's who replaced the window and fitted the kitchen, tiled the floor and walls, very happy with the workmanship and will be using Stuart again on my next project. I have no problem recommending Stuart Hamilton Joinery to anyone that needs work done."

Customer Review

Replace wooden wall framing, cut and fit new floor and re-plasterboard all the walls in ensuite shower room. Skim plaster the walls and make and hang a bespoke door and cupboard doors in same shower room. Cut skirting boards ready to fit when tiling complete.

Cost: £2091

"We decided to overhaul our ensuite shower room. It was fully tiled onto what we assumed was plasterboard but turned out to be thick ply. We had to rip out the ply including the framing on one wall and lift the floor. The room was in a mess, needing to be rebuilt almost from scratch. I phoned Stuart and he came the same day and gave good advice about what needed to be done, listening to what we wanted to achieve. The same day he emailed a detailed quote offering two start dates. The work started the same week. The joiners turned up on time, taking care to cover carpets before they started. Sandy, the main joiner, checked throughout the job what finish we wanted. He was obviously a skilled craftsman who could produce a bespoke finish. They were tidy and worked hard and consistently even during severe weather. Stuart kept in touch by email and phone giving advice and keeping us up-to-date and he was happy to accommodate our specific requests. The job was completed on time and at the cost Stuart had quoted even though the job took a bit longer than he had expected. We would thoroughly recommend Stuart and his team."

Adjustment of PVC door, wall mount for MTB

"I contacted Stuart Hamilton joinery to adjust my front door which was very difficult to open, close and lock and to hang a wall mount for my bike.
Stuart carried out the work to the highest possible standard and I'm very pleased with the result. The job was done very neatly and Stuart and his team were friendly and professional to deal with.

I would not hesitate to recommend Stuart Hamilton Joinery to anyone looking to have quality work done."
