Reputations are not built overnight
In Referenceline's view, this track record is more important than the ratings. Don't be impressed by a few old reviews which may not be representative.  Look for firms with a commitment to asking for feedback - good or bad - from their customers.  We recommend that you look for a track record of ratings and reviews in at least 9 of the last 12 months and that you should not be too concerned about an isolated negative review.  Ask the firm for their side of the story.

Good Practice
Businesses have a legal responsibility to treat you fairly, but it's often hard to know what questions to ask or what standards to expect.  They are the experts and you should be able to rely on them to help you make decisions.  These questions explain the commitments that this business has made to follow a code of practice and they will help you understand what you have a right to expect.

Charges: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain the charges including labour, materials, callout & VAT (as appropriate)?

Timing: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain when the work was expected to start and finish?

Payment: 100%
Before starting work, did the firm explain how to pay (e.g. cash, cheque, etc.)?

Reliable: 100%
During the work, did the firm keep their promises, explaining and agreeing any changes about the work, costs or timing where necessary?

Invoice: 100%
On completion, did the firm give you an invoice showing the cost of materials, labour and VAT?

Guarantee: 100%
On completion, did the firm give you a guarantee for a specified amount of time, or usage (where applicable)?
You can see how many customers have said "Yes" in answer to each question, but please don't expect 100% in every case.  Nobody's perfect and some customers may not be completely sure about the answer.  It's more important that you understand these questions and discuss them with the business so that you both agree what good service means for you.  A responsible business will be happy to explain the details to you and it's always better to clarify these points upfront to avoid misunderstandings later on.

"I was delighted with the work carried out from discussion with Greg, care of filling by team of fitness and quality of windows, help moving and replacing furniture, and no mess whatsoever. The follow-up painting done very soon after, great job done by all the team.

3 windows all fitted in one day, would certainly recommend to others."

Making and fitting timber sash and case windows to match originals

Cost: £24000

"The firm had been recommended to me by a few colleagues and when I first called at their premises to discuss the work I was shown into the workshop and viewed some finished products by the foreman, Richard.

Arrangements were made and Greig came to site to measure up for the quotation for the windows and discuss requirements. Their detailed quotation arrived shortly after. After receiving the quotation, I queried some possible variations to the making of the windows which they priced for me. Due to other works taking place on the house, there was a delay on my part before I was ready to proceed and they updated and confirmed their quotation for me when I was ready to proceed to place the order.

Greig and Richard came to site to take measurements and confirm all details with me before putting the windows into production. We also agreed the timing of the installation which was always envisaged to be in two phases - the installation of the dormer windows first in conjunction with the reroofing works by the roofing contractor, followed later with installation of the rest of the windows once the roofer's scaffolding had been taken down.

The dormer window installation timing fitted perfectly with the roofers progress and the remaining windows were fitted at a mutually convenient time after the roofers had finished.

I am very pleased with the quality of the completed work. At all times, the whole team were professional and helpful. I hope to have the firm carry out further work for me in the near future and on the basis of the work done for me so far would have no hesitation in recommending the firm to anyone who was looking for high quality work. There were some minor changes by way of a few additions and omissions requested by me but the final invoice was as per the accepted amount."

Manufacture and fitting of sash windows, casement windows, french windows and doors for an extension project to an Oxfordshire Grade 2 listed farmhouse and barn.

Cost: £40000

"An extremely well organised and well managed business. Communications and scheduling of work are handled efficiently. Quality of project appraisal, definition of scope, design of product all excellent, including flexibility to alter and amend where necessary and with minimal fuss - a real 'can do' attitude. The product manufacture is first class and the fitting standard exemplary by a team of three who travelled 650 miles round trip to spend 2-3 days on site on 2 separate occasions completing the job. The product and team attitude have also been widely praised by the lead building contractor."

Team:
Greig (business principal), Stuart, Sam, Austin (installation), Sheryl (office). Truly excellent professional service by all.
