Complete bathroom refurbishment

Cost: £3600

"We were recommended Adrian (Ade) by a Heating Engineer who’s opinion we valued and trusted and we were so happy we contacted Ade. From start to finish the whole experience was brilliant and having Ade in the house was a total pleasure. First of all his work is superb and the bathroom fitting from ripping out, refit, installation and tiling was fantastic. The second thing though to say is that Ade suggested great ideas when presented with issues and they were what really made the bathroom work. He suggested hiding pipes and getting rid of boxing in that wasn’t needed. He made tweaks to the design of the bathroom that really were the difference between us having a good bathroom that we had envisioned in our heads to a brilliant bathroom that we can’t stop looking at. Seriously Ade’s ideas and work was the difference.

Little things added to the experience of using Ade too, there was no mess at all, he put carpet protection down to preserve our stairs and landing and really took care whilst working in the house. We’ve recommended him to friends prior to this review and will continue to do so.

Thanks again Ade."

Customer Review

Adrian Cook, of Adrian Jon Bathrooms, stripped tiles from the walls, plastered where necessary, re-tiled,fit a new toilet, radiator, window sill and skirting board. I provided the tiles, radiator and toilet. On the whole his work is good and some of it excellent, but his time management is poor. Not only did he arrive late in the morning and often leave early but he had to go out to buy materials and did not seem to anticipate needing supplies which are normal requirements for the jobs he was doing nor did he buy them all at the same time. Between the late arrivals and the interruptions to his work day,it took Adrian six days to do a job which was scheduled to last for three days, but could perhaps be justified in taking four as the radiator was included while he was working when I learned that the old radiator was beginning to rust. I found the extra days of disruption and the fact that he did much of the cutting work indoors on his dust cloths, which were very thin and barely useful, tiring. If Adrian had come at the usual time in the morning and worked through the day, I believe the job could have readily been done in four days. Adrian worked systematically when he was there working. He obviously knows how to tile and fit, and he has good ideas and a good eye. He is pleasant. However, he left a piece of skirting board jutting out at the architrave and has refused to come and redo it. He wanted to be paid immediately and as he left he said that if there were any problems I should contact him; therefore I went to the bank and settled his invoice as soon as I could, in three days. Despite this, he has not agreed to come repair the skirting board and I now will have to employ someone else to do so. There are a few other ends to tie up but I''ll them done by the person who paints the room. It is a shame that Adrian has finished the job in this way.

Cost: £905

"Adrian is a nice man and knows the technicalities of his business. However, his short days added at least two extra days to the job. Obviously the plaster needed to dry and I do not expect someone to work to an exact set number of hours, but it was me working around Adrian's timekeeping rather than him working around the job. I am disappointed that he skimped at the end and left the window sill needing filling before it can be painted, although he said he'd do it, and that he left the skirting board jutting out and has not agreed to come and redo it. I sent him three emails regarding the problem and he responded to one, so I know he is aware of the problem, but chose not to communicate with me about it. I am a reasonable person and take no pleasure in not being able to write a better review of Adrian's work. If he had better time management and actually stood behind his work, making good any deficiencies, he would be a good choice; however he does not."

   Business Reply:

Hi Michele.
Sorry you were unhappy enough to leave such a bad review.
I replied to your email regarding the skirting board, asking if you could send me a photo so I could see what the problem was.At no stage had I refused to pop back.
Also I would never do any cutting in doors so I don't know why you feel you had to say that.
I supplied and fitted a window board (free of charge) you complained I didn't fill a hole in it.
I supplied and fitted extra skirting board across the shower tray (free of charge)
I boxed in and tiled an awkward angled wall at the bath end (free of charge) costing half a day but i suggested doing it because it would make the whole job look better.
I fitted metal tile trim to all tile edges(no labour charge)
The walls were damaged from tile removal and had to be bonded before plastering (again no charge, even though I mentioned that this might happen in the quote).
It seems you were happy to have a lot of unquoted work done at no extra charge but you were not happy with the extra time it took to do them.
I still have your text where you say "thank you for such a lovely bathroom"

"Ade is a hard working, considerate and highly skilled craftsman who is honest and a pleasure to have around.
He carries out all the work himself apart from the electrics, for which he uses Steve, also highly accomplished and affable. They work together very well and ensured the job was completed exactly on time despite the presence of the winter snowstorms. Due to our house being snowed in, Ade came in unscheduled at the weekend to enable timely completion.
All the work was completed to a very high standard and Ade is an exceptional tiler and plasterer. He has an eye for detail, such as the skillful fitting of skirtings and the use of a hardwood door bar.
Ade charges cost price for bathroom fittings and encourages the customer to select and purchase the fittings themselves, helpfully giving details of an extremely competitive local merchant if requested. The same arrangement goes for tiles, once again ensuring the lowest cost for the customer.
The work was completed several weeks ago and we have had perfect function from day one.
I have no hesitation in recommending Ade (as I have already done so to several friends)

Installation of shower room.

Cost: £2500

"Adrian was excellent in every respect. He explained everything very clearly and gave helpful advice where needed, for example on choosing wall tiles that would fit well with the existing floor tiles. The work was completed within the agreed timescale to a high standard and everything left clean and tidy. The electrician he used for the electrical work completed that to the same high standard and we are delighted with our new shower room. Highly recommended."
