Moved from a mid-terrace cottage where a lot of furniture had to go around the back of our neighbours'' houses and down some steep, narrow steps to the road to a semi-detached house, also on a hill with steps to both the front and back doors.

"I cannot fault the service in any way, from the initial enquiry via the phone, to the site visit, the packing of our items (worth every penny) and the actual removal and delivery to our new home.

The packing and removal staff were fabulous and even went over and above their remit in helping us to disconnect our (rather weirdly plumbed in) washing machine.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them."

We had a complex move - my stuff was moved on one date into storage and then later into my new house, my husband''s stuff was moved out and in on the same day, but the key hand over was delayed.

"The whole process was brilliant from my first phone call to the office, to Kate coming out to give me a quote, to ordering boxes and having them delivered to the the actual move.
I would thoroughly recommend them (in fact I have told everyone how good they are!) they were so helpful, polite and friendly and made moving house a lot easier and a lot less stressful.
They also all worked extremely hard and weíre so helpful."

We had used David Gilkes and Sons Ltd for our business move and were so impressed we used them five months later to move house. Matt came to give us a quotation but we had already decided to give them the contract without getting any other quotes. There was a lot of "stuff" stored at our work premises which they agreed to pick up the day after the house move and bring to our new address. Everything went smoothly.

"The manager arrived promptly to quote for the work and the written quotation arrived within two days. It was extremely competitive and, having used Gilkes for our business move, we decided to go with them without getting further quotes.

All the details regarding insurances etc were included with the quotation. We were provided with lots of boxes and tape in good time to pack everything we felt we wanted to pack before the day.

We had a lot of furniture and various items, including crates of books, which were stored at our business premises and Gilkes were more than happy to move all of that to our new house, which they did as a separate operation the following day to the house move.

As previously the team arrived in good time and we had nothing to do except to direct them as to what was to go in what room, so that they could work out how best to load the van.

The team worked very hard and made sure that all furniture and boxes were placed in the right room and did not leave until we had checked that everything had been collected from the previous house and unloaded at the new.

Excellent service, very caring, always cheerful and very thorough. Highly recommended."

The move involved a packing service that occurred on a Saturday morning. The removal then took place on the following Tuesday (the Monday was a bank holiday). It was a conventional move and there were no interesting aspects or items. The packing and removal personnel were polite, efficient and very professional

"We had used the firm before when we moved around 10 years previously. I decided to give them a call to see if they could move us this time. We hadn't received much notice so I called them on the Monday with a view to them packing us on the Saturday and then moving us on the following Tuesday (8 days from contacting them to actually moving).
They were very accommodating and came the next day to look around and quote. We thought the quote was reasonable and confirmed on the Wednesday that we'd like to proceed.
On Saturday, 2 packers arrived at 8.45am and packed up our house. They were friendly and polite and were no trouble at all. They were finished by around 2pm (we had a 3 bed bungalow).
They labelled all of the boxes and left them for us just in case we needed something.
On the Monday, the removal men arrived and spent the morning moving our things into the lorry. After lunch, we arrived at our new house and the unloading began - this took a few hours. A few of them began rebuilding our beds and there was one wardrobe which needed to be dismantled to get it up the stairs and then they rebuilt it again in the bedroom.
They were friendly and polite. It took about 3.5 hours to finish the job. There were a couple of occasions where they had left a box and we wanted it moved... I asked them to put it somewhere else instead, and this was done immediately and with no complaints.
Overall, we were very pleased with the firm and would recommend them. Our move was very conventional though."

"This is the third time I have used David Gilkes and Sons Ltd in the last two years. The first time round I chose them having had quotes from three companies and been very impressed. I was not disappointed and have not looked elsewhere since. This time I had no problems with timing but last time I had to reschedule quite late and the whole team were very helpful. They have looked after my precious sewing cabinet very well and took care with my newly decorated home. I always felt that they were trying to make my move as easy as possible from their end, so important at such a stressful time."

"From the first phone call with our enquiry, we knew we had chosen the right company. Kate came out to quote us on the full package. She was confident and made us feel everything was going to be alright. We thought the quote given was fair and accepted with a real good feeling.

We changed our moving date three times and there was a full understanding to what we thought could be a problem.

The day before the move we had three people come in to pack - it was amazing. All packed up safely and we were advised on a time they would be there in the morning. On time eight people arrived and commenced the arduous task ahead.

Within just four hours all our belongings were in the lorries and they parked up at the new address ready to unload.

Sometime later in fact a long time later we had the keys and it was all systems go. They worked for about another three hours carefully taking all our belongings into the new house. The next morning we had three members of staff come to unpack. This was the perfect finish to our move. Canít thank Gilkes removal enough and they made what we thought would be a difficult situation EASY."

"My wife and I decided to use a moving company when we moved house recently, mainly due to the distance involved as it would take 3 days. After looking at a number of companyís we decided on David Gilkes & Sons Ltd as our preferred movers. They were the only ones who actually came out and discussed our requirements and needs. They were also very competitively priced.
I can only say our experience of all the staff is excellent, 5 star service in fact. We had a number of false starts with late date changes which were out of our control. Gilkes were very understanding and most helpful with changing the dates at such short notice. The office staff were very understanding and helpful all the way through.
The team who moved all our possessions were very professional in how they planned what went on the truck first and took great care when moving items. The same care was taken when unloading everything when we arrived at our destination.
We would like to express our gratitude to everyone at Gilkes for their help from first contact to the day we moved in. Without their expertise and help we would have found the experience more stressful.

We moved from our home of 30+ years, which has been our childrens , and grandchildrenís first home so as you can gather there was a LOT of stuff. Bags, boxes, furniture, memory boxes etc. And 5 dogs!

"I have to say firstly, excellent service and staff.
After the first visit to quote for our removal I had to call them back out to requote as I had sold a lot of furniture- they were happy to do this, and promptly.
On the day of the move, each removal person shook hands with me and introduced them selves, a really nice touch. I was also asked several times during the morning, if I was ok, a kind and caring staff. Very thoughtful of how I may have been feeling.
Upon arrival at the new home, it soon began obvious that everything was NOT going to fit!!
I had a bit of a panic, but the staff kept reassuring me it was ok. Bless them, I had them put stuff in piles and swapping stuff about..all done with a smile.
In the end quite a lot had to go into storage. Which again they were happy to help.
Very polite and caring staff."
